We build all our pools with a good solid structure so as to prolong the life of any pool we build or re-line.
The main cause of failed ponds is in adequate footings and side support, we construct all wall footings using steel mesh or rods and waterproofed fibreglass reinforced concrete.
all our pools are built with all the vertical sides around the perimeter and along the marginal planting shelves being either built out of concrete block or cast concrete with the marginal shelf also leveled of using glass reinforced concrete,
This helps to give a solid firm structure to ensure you pond has a permenant shape without this after heavy rains the suface water runs upto the pond and runs down under the pool between the lining and the soil over time the fine soil ends up under the bottom of the pool leaving any sharp edges exposed, this same problem also causes your surrounding edge to subside and your liner to stretch under the weight of water.
We normally use a butyl or pvc liner with a guarrantee against seam failure, frost and UV damage of at least 20 years, laid on a rot proof felt underlay for added protection.
The edging is all personal choice but stone is usually preffered for its natural look.
Wherever possible we try to build the pools perimeter from at at least 4" below the waterlevel so as no liner is visible, not only does it look fantastic but it also gives extra added protection to the liner.
